## Overview

BRLA is Avenia's centralized Brazilian real stablecoin, mint/redeemed 1:1 for BRL and backed by Brazilian government bonds and BRL cash in regulated {{term:custody}}custody{{/term}} — inverting the usual emerging-market dollar-escape pattern. Most stablecoins let emerging-market users escape their local currency into dollars. BRLA does the opposite: it tokenizes the Brazilian Real for on-chain use, backed by government bonds (titulos publicos) and BRL cash held by Avenia (formerly BRLA Digital), a Sao Paulo startup with $17M in Series A funding. Deployed natively on Polygon, Gnosis, Celo, and Moonbeam with no Ethereum presence, BRLA's chain footprint is unusual — Celo dominates with 76% of the ~$14.7M supply. The contract is upgradeable with full blacklisting via a COMPLIANCE_ROLE, governed by a single entity with no multisig or DAO, and proof-of-reserves {{term:attestation}}attestations{{/term}} are self-reported on a Notion page. Yield variants (stBRLA, yBRLA) exist as separate tokens, positioning BRLA as infrastructure for BRL-denominated DeFi rather than just a remittance rail — though at sub-$15M market cap, the infrastructure is still looking for its builders.
